BACKGROUND & CONTEXT

We have received a number of questions regarding the 2017 season of Almanac Gardener, most often related to the reasoning behind the reruns and the future of the show. Trust is paramount to all that we do at NC State Extension; it forms the foundation for everything we develop and deliver to North Carolinians. As such, we want to share some background regarding Almanac Gardener and will continue to update folks moving forward.

Almanac Gardener is being presented as a “best of” season in 2017 primarily as a result of financial challenges. UNC-TV is facing budget changes across the organization, and this has resulted in a scaling back of operations in certain areas of production including local programming.

As a testament to our long-time partnership, UNC-TV agreed to air this best-of season to ensure that North Carolinians continued to receive Almanac Gardener content, which also gave us time to explore long-term options. The good news is we’ve found an exciting solution!

A team from NC State Extension and the university’s College of Agriculture & Life Sciences (CALS) has secured seed funding to develop a new digital platform (i.e. a web-based show) here at NC State. It’s still early in the planning process, but this new program would share educational programming covering three broad areas/topics: In the Kitchen, In the Garden and On the Farm.

Our videos and resources within the show – tentatively called NC State Extension’s Home Grown – will help you discover what is raised and grown in North Carolina, and the farmers that help feed us. We’ll help you learn what plants are in season and how to get a bumper crop from your home garden. We’ll take you into the kitchen to learn how to safely prepare meals that are healthy and nutritious.

We look forward to reconnecting you to the foods and agriculture of North Carolina.

Additionally, Mike Gray will remain as executive producer and continue hosting the program in some capacity. We’re building on the current Almanac Gardener model to include additional content in areas where NC State Extension and CALS can provide expertise, but bringing the production in-house, which is more sustainable given the circumstances.

We’re aiming for a fall 2017 launch, depending on how things come along, but that’s where things stand for now. We hope this helps clarify some things around Almanac Gardener, but feel free to contact us with questions or feedback any time.

Thank you for your ongoing support!
