#PassTheMicYouth has partnered with the Literacy and Community Initiative to produce a webinar titled “Activating Youth Voices: Promoting Activism and Advocacy in Teens and Young Adults”. This 35-minute presentation provides a model and resources for educators and community leaders who work with youth who can change the world, and who will with supportive adults around them.
Check out the webinar at the Friday Institute’s website:
Activating Youth Voices: Promoting Activism and Advocacy in Teens and Young Adults
In the webinar, #PTMY’s Dr. Christy Byrd and LCI’s Dr. Crystal Lee describe the three components of activism: awareness, agency, and action. They then describe five steps that educators and others who work with youth can use to give youth a voice in their communities:
- Write
- Revise and edit
- Publish
- Celebrate
- Engage and lead
The presenters go into detail about #PassTheMicYouth and the Literacy and Community Initiative’s efforts to highlight the important work of young activists. The LCI includes students from Juntos, who we interviewed in the Mic Drop: Juntos Means Together. The webinar also features content from #PTMY, including:
- Audrey Apollon’s poem “Speak Up, Speak Out,” featured in Not Your Mother’s Activism and on the blog
- Artwork by Je’wel Lucas, featured on our blog
- Excerpts from the episode Activism, According to Students
- Excerpts from the episode Teaching for Social Justice Amidst a Pandemic
Be sure to share the webinar with friends and colleagues, and encourage the young people you know to submit to #PassTheMicYouth!
